The Slim Fast Diet Review: A Few Pros and Many Cons

The Slim Fast Diet is yet another rapid weight loss program. It is quite popular, and you can purchase the Slim Fast shakes, meal replacement bars and other products at just about any grocery store, drug store or discount store. One pro is that it is very simple and straightforward. You drink one shake in lieu of food at breakfast, another (instead of food) at lunchtime, a healthy dinner (typically consisting of a small amount of lean protein and veggies) and some Slim Fast snacks in between meals.
A con: many health and fitness experts have pointed out that the ingredients in the shakes could be somewhat healthier and more nutritious. (According to the same experts, today the shakes are slightly more nutritious than when they first came on the market, but these experts also contend that the ingredients are still not optimal for either overall health or weight loss.)
A second problem that many customers and professional reviewers have noted is the cost of these products. They are usually quite expensive, and considering how many of these products dieters actually need to buy in order to follow the plan, this can be quite problematic for a lot of people who are on a tight budget.
It is also a very low calorie diet, which is certainly effective for rapid weight loss, but not great for losing weight on a permanent basis. When you train your body to adapt to a very low level of caloric input, your metabolism slows down and then when you stop dieting, you typically gain the weight back. Once again, the only way to achieve lasting weight loss is to make genuine and permanent changes in the way you eat and exercise. It’s those lifestyle changes that really help people keep the weight off for good.
Essentially, like any other fasting program, the Slim Fast diet is a form of a starvation diet, and this is not safe. Also, people who are quite literally starving because they are restricting their caloric intake so much are much more inclined to “fall off the wagon” by giving in to their cravings for sugary, fatty or excessively salty foods. Not only that, but when you go on extreme diets, it is not just fat (and water weight) that you lose. You also lose lean muscle, and no one wants to do that. (Indeed, the more muscle mass you have, the higher your metabolic rate is because your body is rapidly incinerating those calories whether it is in motion or at rest.) So stay away from crash diets like this one that can cause your weight to yo-yo, and work on making those all important lifestyle changes of exercising more and eating more whole grains fruits and vegetables instead.
